Notes for Giles Newton

Came from England to Virginia

Prior to the Revoluntionary War was a resident of Henrico Co, VA. With his two sons James and Younger Newton, migrated to marlboro District, Sc in 1785. He purchased large tracts of land on both sides of the North and South Carolina Line, and reared a fmily of two sons and four daughters.

Giles and his two sons, James and Younger, served as Patriots in the Revoutionary War

Dr. John Goodwin Herndon's records show that in the Revolutionary War Public Service Claims of Caroline County, Virginia, located at the Virginia State Library, RIchmond, Virginia, DAVID HERNDON's name appears next to that of Giles Newton, that other Newtons who received Certificates for Revolutionary War Public Service Claims were John, Peter, Jesse, and Mary.

1777, September 1, David Herndon purchased 200 acres on both sides of Buffalo Creek in Charlotte Co, VA, paying James Burton, Jr., of Pittsylvania Co, 125 pounds. This property was separated from that of his brother John Herndon's lands only by the lands of Edward Mosely, Sr. On 26 November 1782 David Herndon sol the above mentioned land to Giles Newton, of Charlotte, for 200 pounds. This property adjoined Hudson's corner, Moseley's line and Robertson's line.

1787, December 5, Benjamin and Ann Herndon and James Newton witness sale of 640 acres in Marlborough District, SC, where Giles Newton, of Charlotte Co, VA, a planter, deeded to Younger Newton of Marlborough District. 100 pounds, Deed proven May 10, 1788 aby Benjamin Herndon before William Easterling, recorded November 20, 1788, Deed Bk A, p 183, Marlborough District, SC. This is the tract of land granted Giles Newton on August 7, 1786 "By His excellency William Moultrie Esqr., Governor and Command-in-Chief in and over the State of South Carolina.

Apparently there were two 640 acre land grants awarded to Giles Newton by colonial Governor Moultrie. The first in 1785. By early 1800's Giles' two sons, James and Younger, owned appox 3000 acres

1797, July 7. Benjamin Herndon of Halifax Co, VA and GIles Newton of Charlotte Co, VA, sold to James Newton 200 acres in Charlotte Co on the waters of Buffalo Creek, bounded by Mary Ales, Burrows and Mosely. 100 pounds Virginia money.

Will written March 31, 1804 and proved October 21, 1807 in Marlborough District SC, Will Book A, p 53 Names Wife Betty, daughters Martha Bullard, Ann Herndon and Elizabeth Summerall and grand-daughter Betty Portwood; sons Younger and James and son-in-law Benjamin Herndon
