McKendree Camp Ground and Church: In 1797 the place was known as the Camp Ground until 1812. In 1812 a church was built of hewn poplar logs and the Bible was placed in the church where it remained until 1912 when the current church was built. The original deed of the church was lost so in 1845, WW Dowdy made another deed to the church so that McKendree Church would have all the right it had under the old deed, a place to have a church forever. In its early days it was a church and a "pricription" school. At that time there was no other church or school in this community.
