Notes for William Johnston

September 25, 1674 original date, deserted and now granted by order, October 15, 1698 to Thomas Joyner, granted 1300 acres, Is of Wight Co, on the Black Water for transport of 26 persons, Wm. Johnson is listed

On December 21, 1678, Philarete Woodward, signed a receipt for 4,000 pound of tobacco in a cask from William Johnson "for ye maintenance of my child"; it was witnessed by Thomas Woodard, Jr and John Duffie, Isle of Wight, Will and Deed Book 1, 1662-1715, p 392. He is the father of an illegitimate child by a daughter of Colonel Thomas Woodward (1604-1677), first Surveyor-General of the Carolina Colony. By August 24, 1680, Philarete Woodward was the wife of John Giles of Isle of Wight; for with her consent he executed a deed of gift to Jane, "Daughter of said Philarete", of a plantation of 400 acres at Blackwater where Edward Hayes lived, with reversion to said John Giles in event of Jane's death without issue; witnessed by John Harris and Richard Poole, Isle of Wight, Will & Deed Book 2, pp 255-267.

August 16, 1690, William Johnson of the Lower Parish of Isle of Wight Co bought 100 acres on a branch (part of 2,100 acres patented by George Pierce September 21, 1674) in said parish from George and Ann Pierce of the same place, Isle of Wight, DB 1, 1688-1704, p 31

July 15, 1698: In Owen Griffeth's will, WB 2, p 397, Isle of Wight, VA, he names grandson John Griffeth, Grandaughters Patience Griffeth, Margaret Edwards, Judy Edwards, son-in-law William Johnson D July 15, 1698, R. September 9, 1698 Wit Henry Applewhaite, Jane Bragg, wife Extrx.

On December 9, 1698 William Johnson in a deposition relating to Thomas Norsworthy testified that he, WIlliam, was fifty years of age, thereby fixing 1648 as the year of his birth, Deed Book 1, 1688-1704, Isle of Wight, VA, p 266

September 8, 1701, William and Sarah Johnson of the Lower Parish of Isle of WIght County, Blacksmith, sold 100 acres of the Pierce purchase land to John Bardin of the Upper Parish, Isle of Wight, VA, DB 1, p 347

October 28, 1702, William Johnson patented 428 acres of land south of Blackwater River beginning in a branch bet. 2 Indian fields in Isle of Wight County on account of having imported 9 persons into the colony, Patent Book 9, p 470.

August 18, 1715, Madison and Margaret Street and Ann and Sarah Surby of Newport Parish, daughters of the late John Surby, sold WIlliam Johnson for 2,100 pounds of tobacco a tract of 150 acres in said parish (from 200 bought by John Surby from George Pierce July 27, 1691), Isle of Wight, Great Book, 1715-1724, p 90
