Notes for Robert de Wessington

The Washington Ancestry, Hoppin, Vol 1., p 34
Robert and Joan were evidently making a marriage settlement on their son Robert, 16 years of age, and his bride Agnes daughter of Randle le Gentyl. Westminster, on the Octave of St. Martin 6 Edw. II (Nov. 18, 1312), 13 messuages, 100 acres of land, and 4.5 acres of meadow in Kerneford. Robert's age can be deduced from the inquest on his father's possessions taken in 1324 [Inquisition post mortem 18 Edw. II, No. 26; now File 88, No. 16]

Vol 1, p 34
Robert de Wessington is tyled "of Kerneford" (Carnforth), half of which manor, as we learn later, he had received from his brother-in-law, Walter de Strickland.

Vol 1, p 32
Was of the Durham Washingtons, ...some time it will be proved that he was a grandson of Sir Walter de Wessington of Wessington, in the county Durham.
Robert appears to have gained the favor not only of the Stickland family but also of the powerful de Thwengs. Marmaduke, first Lord Thweng, was a famous soldier; he fought for Edward I, and led the English Knights at the Battle of Stirling, 1297, and in his train was Robert de Wessington. Along with Hugh de Louther, Robert de Washeton was Knight of the Shire of Westmorland in 1300 [Nicolson and Burn, History of Westmorland and Cumberland, II, 559]
