Notes for John Washington

The Washington Ancestry, Charles A. Hoppin, 1932, Vol 1, p 107
Sir John Washington of Thrapston, Northants, Knight married, first, Mary Curtis, sis of the Philip Curtis of Islip, Northants, gentleman, who later married Sir John's sister Amy Washington. Sir John was honored by James I with knighthood in 1623. He was a Royalist during the Civil War period, 1640-49; he was patron of the living of the parish of Carlton, Bedfordshire, and on August 12, 1642, caused William Pargiter to be instituted to the rectorate of the church of that place. Thrapston was his place of residence. After the Civil War ended in 1649, Baron Spencer testified before the committee for the compounding of Royalists that Sir John Washington, not the Baron, was entitled to the rents of the Bedfordshire estates of the Baron, "By virtue of an extent which the said John Washington had upon the estate of the said Earle in the said County of Bedford." Sir John married, secondly, Dorothy Pargiter of Greatworth, Northants, widow of Kirkby, who died in 1678.
