Notes for Benjamin Shipley


Living Individual - Details withheldHamilton Co, TN, Deed Book B, p 71, Deed of Trust, August 28, 1833, Benjamin Shipley to John Pearce, Trustees for benefit of John Patterson, all of Hamilton Co TN to secure debt of $50 to Patterson. In consideration of $1. Live stock-blcksmith tools, etc. in shop of Shipley at Dallas. Richard Shipley was one of the witnesses.

Hamilton Co, TN, Deed Book C, p 5, Indenture, November 25, 1835, Benjamin Shipley to William P Shipley, both of Hamilton Co. TN, Deed of trust to secure $100 beft to John Patterson personal property.

Benjamin had a blacksmith shop at Dallas, which was briefly the county seat of Hamiton County, TN. In August 1838, a $100 reward was offered for the apprehension of Benjmain SHipley for the attempted murder of Archibald McCallie, who was shot through the arm and hip on June 23, 1838. Benjamin Shipley was "about 6 feet, stoutly built, rather rawboned, is considered a stout man, his skin is tolerably fair, and somewhat freckled but generally sunburnt, fair hair and pale blue or grey eyes, surly countenance, given to intoxication, on all occasions boisterous and uncontrollable when drinking, and is a sort of a blacksmith."
