Notes for Rachel Walker

From "A Sketch of the Burney Family" by Thomas J. Burney: RACHEL WALKER:
His [Silvanus Walker] oldest daughter, married William Vardeman about 1794, who resided some years in Morgan and for many years in Jasper County. A large family of children were the fruit of this marriage. Jane, the eldest daughter, married a man named Traylor, whose subsequent history I know nothing of. Elcy, the second daughter, married Organ Tatum, who emigrated to Alabama in the early settlement of that state, settled in Autauga County, where he lived many years, raising a large family. Charity, another daughter, married a man named Scroggins, his sons, Henry, John, Silvanus , and James, were my playmates, but after we came to man' s estate I saw but little of them. John died young. Henry and Silvanus were dissolute young men and I think died before middle age. My uncle Vardeman, during the Indian War of 1813-14 was employed as a scout by the Governor of Georgia and spent much time in traversing the wilderness west of the Ocmulgee river. A stockade fort enclosed this dwelling and afforded refuge to the neighborhood in times of alarm.
