Notes for Matthew Hall

Matthew married his niece. They moved to Oregon in 1847. Matthew and Malinda had 3 sons and 4 daughters..

MATHEW HALL, a native of NC and b. Feb 5, 1798. Mother, Malinda, b. in Tn. Mathew was pioneer to Yamhill Co., OR. As a youth in NC learned blacksmith trade. As young man settled in Macoupin Co., IL. He braved the dangers of plains and gold craze started. In 1847 set out and ended up in Clackamas Co., OR for 1st winter at Molalla, OR. In spring went to Astoria, OR then to Portland. Left in 1849. Settled on farm near Newberg. Went to CA to mines. Back to OR to farm on 620 acres. Died 1869 age of 71. Known far and near as Squire Hall, as was Justice of Peace for 12-15 years.

James and Matthew Hall were born in North Carolina, and had emigrated to Illinois in 1816, and settled in Madison County. Shortly thereafter, James moved to Macoupin County. Matthew Hall, a blacksmith by trade, came to the Macoupin County several years later. John L. Davis became the husband of a sister of Oliver W. Hall. Some years after James Hall settled in the county, Isaac Hall, a young man noted for his herculean strength, and a brother of James and Matthew, hearing at his home in Madison that his brother James lay sick, came up to visit him.
