Notes for Lewis Sublett

"Bill Sublette Mountain Man" by John E Sunder: Lewis Sublette, although having received a military land grant in Kentucky in 1780, was a resident of Chesterfield County, Virginia, as late as 1783. In that year or early in 1784, however, he took his wife, Mary Trabue Sublette, and large family to Kentucky to settle on Greer Creek in Fayette (later Woodford) County and operated a ferry across the Kentucky RIver. Mary Trabue died in the 1790's and Lewis subsequently married Sarah Samuels. He died in 1827, leaving his widow in possession of his home.

B.H.Dupuy, (Louisville, KY: Courier-Journal Job Printing Co., 1908), p 263: Soldier in the Revolution, was at the siege of Yorktown, and the surrender of Cornwallis. Lewis and his wife, Mary, moved to Fayette (now Woodford) Co. Ky., in 1782, and shortly after their arrival he, with thirty other men, went to the relief of the inmates of Bryan's Station, which was attacked by the Indians. On their arrival, the Indians had retreated, whom they pursued, and gaining the first sight of them on the opposite bank of Licking River, they crossed the stream, dismounted and attacked them, but were badly defeated. In their flight, they lost their horses, several officers, and a number of men.
