Notes for Mary "Minnie" Douglas Read

1919 50th Wedding Anniversary news article ""Mother" Brickhouse, as she is known to her many friends and neighbors, was seventeen years of age when she was married fifty years ago."

On a note someone sent to Frank and Gordon Brickhouse: "Mary Douglas Read - wife of Joseph Alexander Brickhouse bears the distinction of having carried dispatches through the Federal line at midnight - although she was only 12 years old. She was accompanied only by a negro girl. With their help General Black was surprised and his entire force was captured by the Confederate Army."
Note: according to the 1870 Census she was born in 1853, if she was 12 the year would have been 1865.
