John Tarpley, the brother of James Tarpley seems to have been more of a public man, participating in the public affairs of the county and the state. In his will he left some 300 acres of land to the church at Farnham as glebe. That has been sold in the memory of the present citizens.

He was one of two justices in RIchmond County in 1704 (William and Mary College Quarterly Vol 3, p 177) and a member of Virginia Assembly Session of October 25, 1710 from RIchmond County (Colonial Virginia Register page 98)

Known as Col. John Tarpley
