In the records of Lee Burns, he felt that James's mother was Anne Bowles (Bowes). have found a record of James Smith as follows:. 12-10-1792, between John Bowles, attorney for James Smith and Major Childress - 200 acres surveyed in the name of James Smith on the Little Yadkin. At Joseph Standley's north east corner and William Childress's line, including Major Childress's improvements. There were no witnesses and it was signed by John Bowles. (Stokes County Records of Deeds Vol 2 1793- 1797, (341), Avshere ). This is too much of a coincidence and will be further investigated to see if there is a relation between the Bowles (Bowes) and Smiths.
James Smith is in York County, South Carolina, after about 1793-1794 -- moving there from Rowan County, North Carolina. According to further accounts, James stayed in South Carolina until after the death of his wife in approximately 1830; he then left and went to Georgia to possibly join other family relations.
I am also questioning the death date of James. On one family Bible record it is listed 1-14-1835 on another it is listed 1843, both in Cassville, Georgia-- this information is suppose to be copied out of the same Bible by two different sources.
I am of the assumption, since James might have been raised in Virginia, he met Hannah in Rowan County and they married. He moved from there to Union County South, Carolina. Since his future son-in-law, Benjamin, was living in the area (North Carolina/South Carolina line) I feel this is where Benjamin and Susan met and upon marriage, registered there marriage in Rutherford County North Carolina.
