According to the sketch of Lewis Herndon, he was "born to the marriage of Phillip and Sarah (Hitchcock) Herdon, who were natives of Tennessee. The father made farming his chief occupation, though he worked considerably at blacksmithing. After several moves he settled in Stewart Count in 1833; and there spent the remainder of his days. For a number of years he held the position of magistrate. His wife was a Baptist. Neither lived to be old. ...like his his father, is a Democrate. Both he and his father volunteered to serve in the Mexican war, but were never called out.
