Notes for James Asbury Potter

From Early Hamilton Settlers, John Wilson, 2001, p 260, "James Asbury married Sarah Iles. After she died in 1893, he married her younger sister, Hannah Elizabeth."

1900 Census Hamilton County, Tennessee 11th Civil District, p 241, family 255, he was a farm laborer

1908 Chattanooga TN Polk City Directory lists a James Potter , opr Mathis & Davis Co.

1910 Census 3rd Civil District, Hamilton County, Tennessee, p 139, April 27-28, 1910, farmer

Listed as James Anderson on his death certificate: died of smallpox complicated by Rheumatism

Obituary Chattanooga Times, Jun 4, 1914
"Sale Creek, Tenn., June 3 - J.A. Potter, familiarly known as "Dollar" Potter, a respected citizen of this community, died suddenly at his home yesterday. He had recently recovered from an attack of smallpox. about 4 yesterday afternoon he was seized with an acute pain in his back, from which he could get no relief, but grew worse rapidly until 7, when he died. Mr. Potter was 60 years old, and had been a hopeless cripple from rheumatism for nearly ten years. His wife had been dead several years. He leaves six children, one son and five daughters, the son and two of the daughters being grown up. He was buried at the Shelton cemetery today."

They lived on hill in Dick Fox Hollow just above Sale Creek which is now flooded by Chickamuga Reservoir The hill can still be reached
though. (per Shough Iles) near Brown's Bluff near Poole Hollow Rd then on to a private road across the water from it. Old Jes Iles place surrounds it. Near Charles Alinger and old Dick Fox place.
