Notes for Peter Bagley, Jr.

In 1678 Peter was on the Surry County Militia List of those as qualified in either estate or person to find and maintain a man and horse or to go themselves when occasion required. In 1688,1698, and 1702 he was listed on the tax rolls of Surry County. The 1694 tax roll states that there were 19 people living on his plantation. The 1704 "Virginia Quit Rent Rolls for Surry County" lists him as having 100 acres. In 1706 he was granted 440 acres in Surry County and in 1711 another 440 acres. In 1723 he was granted 100 acres south of the Blackwater in what is now Sussex County. In his will dated November 15,1735, Peter gave his cousin, John Bagley, the 75 acres John was living on. Peter gave his son, George, the upper most 75 acres of his plantation and also 200 acres of a tract of land containing 400 acres, and a negro slave girl named Sara. If John died without heirs, his lands were to be divided between all Peter's Children. To his daughter, Sarah Tucker, he gave one iron pot, one cow and one calf. Peter also stated that his servant Simon Rowland, was to serve only until the reached the age of twenty-eight and was then to be freed and paid three barrels of Indian corn and a full suit of apparell. The rest of his estate was to be equally divided between all his children. His wife was not mentioned, so apparently she had already died. His son, George, was named as executor and presented his will to the court on December 17, 1735.
