Edward Ragsdale, will

In the Name of God Amen I Edward Ragsdale Gent. of the County of Lunenburg through the mercies of God being in perfect mind and memory do constitute this my Last Will and Testament and desire it may be received as such.

Imprimis first and principally I most humbly bequeath my soul to Almighty God my maker beseeching his most gracious acceptance and through the mercies of my compassionate redeemer Jesus Christ

Item I give my body to the ground from whence it was taken in full expectancy of its resurrection from _?__ __?__ as to my burial I desire may be decent at the discretion of my executor hereafter named and as to my Temporal estate it has pleased God to bless me with my will and desire is that it may be disposed and _?__in manner and form following

Item I give and bequeath to my son Edward Ragsdale part of my land where I now live to be __?__ as follows beginning at his line on __?___ Branch thence up the said branch as far as to Gees line as __?__ .....

Item I give and bequeath to Edward and Martha Pettypool one Negro girl named Patience to be agreeable to a deed of gift recorded in Lunenburg County Court.

Item I give and bequeath to my daughter Ann Neblitt and her heirs one Negro girl named Lucy

Item My will and desire is the other part of my land be equally divided between my sons William, John, Baxter and Joshua to be divided between them at their mother's discretion and my Negroes Sam, Jack Phebe, Daniel and Harry with their increase and all my other estate (not before __________) to be equally divided between my sons Edward, William, John, Baxter and Joshua and my daughters Elizabeth, Tathy, and Jemima at the __?__of their mother.
And to my wife Molly Ragsdale during her life or widowhood my whole estate real and personal for support of her and my children, but if she should marry I then lend her one child's part during her life.

And finally I nominate and appoint my two sons Edward and William my whole and sole executors of this my Last Will and Testament hereby revoking and making void all former wills. I do hereby publish and declare this to be my Last Will and Testament in witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this seventeenth day of December One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Nine.

At Court held for Lunenburg County the 13th day of July 1780 The within written Last Will and Testament of Edward Ragsdale dec'd was exhibited in court by the executor named which was proved by the oath of two of the witnesses to subscribe and order to be recorded and on the motion of the said exr who made an oath according to law, a certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate of deceased will in __?__ __?__he giving a bond and security whereupon he together with John Ball for his security into and bond for that purpose as according to Law __?__ to the __?__ thereto.

In obediance to the order hereunto ___________ we the subscribors appraised the estate of Edward Ragsdale dec'd agreeable in the above Inventory. Given under our hands this 2nd day of November 1800: Samuel Garland Wm Hays Henry Hayes. At a court held for Lunenburg County on the 14th day of December 1800.

The within inventory and appraisement of the estate of Edward Ragsdale dec'd was returned and ordered to be recorded.

Edward Ragsdale, will
October 10, 1797

In the Name of God Amen I Edward Ragsdale of the County of Lunenburg being of perfect mind and memory do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following Item I give an bequeath to my loving wife Ann Ragsdale, my whole estate both real and personal to her and heirs forever to dispose as she thinks proper except my Tract of land in Prince George County which I have sold to Barnard Hobbs of said county of Prince George and reserve the said Hobbs to have a deed executed conveying a right to said land on his paying one hundred and ten pounds to my executor

I __ as appraisement of my estate

I appoint my beloved wife Ann, Peter Gauliger and Sterling Neblett Executor to this my last Will and Testament In writing whereof I hereunto set my hand and affix my seal this tenth day October, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety Seven

At a Court held for Lunenburg County the 9th day of July 1801 the within Last Will and Testament of Edward Ragsdale dec'd was exhibited in court and proved by Oath of Two of the witnesses thereto subscribed and ordered to be recorded. Sterling Neblitt and Peter Gainkin the Two executors therein named came in court and refused to qualify as exors to the same, and on the motion of John Ragsdale who having made Oath according to Law, Certificate is granted him for obtaining letters of administration with the will of Edward Ragsdale dec'd, wherefore he gave Bond with approved as security according to Law.
