Notes for Peter Ragsdale

Peter had a Revolutionary War record, as Sgt. in Virginia, Capt. Samuel Hopkins Company, 6th Regiment, Col. James Hendricks, commanding (Henings Statutes of Virginia, Vol. 7, pp 206-209) He served from September 1, 1776 - May 31, 1777
His name appears on Rev. marker erected by NSDAR at Lebanon Churchyard. Peter is listed on p 554 of the DAR Patriot Index, 1966.

He had moved with his parents, 1754 , Lunenburg County, VA, which became Mecklenburg County, VA in 1764, living on Bluestone Creek.

Bedford County, Virginia, Military-French & Indian War: Providers of Provisions for Militia
An act of assembly, passed March 1758, the 31st year of the reign of King George II, some of the militia were called out for service in the early days of the French and Indian War, Annexed to this act, was a schedule of the names of the militia officers and soldiers, and the citizens who furnished provisions to that militia. This is the schedule pertaining to Bedford County.

p 26 1782 Tax lists of Mecklenburg Co show Peter Ragsdale with 9 white people in his family, viz: self, wife, 7 children
p 33: Peter sold land on Bluestone Creek November 10, 1783, Grant of 194 acres in Greenville County October 5, 1784,
p 26 says Peter sold 50 acres of the Bluestone Creek land to his brother William, Mecklenburg Co, Book G, p 322

From Godfrey Ragsdale by Caroline Skelton, p 34: Peter Ragsdale and his brother-in-law Rev. Mark Moore (married to Peter's sister Rachel) founded a quasi-boarding school in 1787. Ragsdale children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren attended the school as late as the Civil War.

British Mercantile Claims 1775-1803, lists Peter Ragsdale. 11 pounds, 1 shilling, 9 3/4 pence due 1775. He moved from Mecklenburg to Grrenville Co, SC.

Lebanon Methodist Church History, p 44, Members of this first Lebanon (The Grove) Church were as follows: 8. Peter Ragsdale (c 1736-1800) and wife Sarah Charlton. Both had Revolutionary service, were members of the church and buried here.
p 55, Peter Ragsdale (Revolutionary soldier) died 9/16/1799, was buried in Old Grove cemetery. Also his wife, Sarah Charlton Ragsdale, who died 1/15/1830 at age 100. She was a sister of Mary Charlton Sullivan who died at 115.

Historical Marker is erected in front of the church, "The United Methodist Church was originally located about 1 1/4 miles east and named The Grove. It was visited by Bishop Francis Asbury in 1790 and 1800. Relocated about 1/4 mile SW of here after the land was obtained 1832. Present House of worship was erected in 1850's and name changed to Lebanon."

Large marble marker erected at the entrance to the church cemetery honors the revolutionary soldier and heroines of the Lebanon area on the front. Sgt. Peter Ragsdale, Lt. Jno. Camp and Thomas Camp are listed. On the reverse side of the marker it lists the church organizers 1785 Rev. Mark Moore and family of Arnolds, Bowmans, Dunklins, Camps, Gores, Ragsdales, Sullivan, Ridgeways.

Edmund Ragsdale was the administrator of Peter Ragsdale's estate, March 19, 1805, the following were listed in the pay out of the estate: Larkin, Richard, John Ridgeway (Fanny's husband), Elijah, Edmond all received $100 except John Ridgeway ($50) some say this was because some of the children could not travel to receive their portion and some children took two parts.
