Notes for Edward Hassell

In Norfolk Co, Virginia records Edward's last name is usually spelled Hastell with variants, Haswell and Hassold, but was later on always spelled as Hassell by his descendants in North Carolina.

In the records of Shaftsbury Precinct (later to become Chowan County, NC), Edward is mentioned twice in the court record dated September 27, 1670. First, he was identified as "Edward Haswell who married Katherine WIlliams the executrix of Roger Williams of Albemarle County", and second, he was identified as Edward Hasevell in his suit against Mr. Hugh Smithwick.

Edward first appears in the records of Norfolk Co, Virginia June 17, 1672, when he appears as administrator of Hercules Gunn, decd. (Book E Part 2, Orders 1665-75, p 81) and the same book (p 89) shows him as one of the men ordered to clear up the highways under John Biggs (his father-in-law), on February 18, 1672/3.
Prior to 1672 he seems to have been connected with Nansemond Co and North Carolina for at the same court above he was sued for cattle due Sarah, the widow of William Wright of Nansemond Co. William had deeded a number of cattle to Edward Hassell of Mattacomack Creek in ALbemarle County, Carolina Province on August 23, 1671. In the suit it was stated that Hassell had already made over certain cattle in payment and that they were running on Edward Mansour's plantation on the Chowan River in North Carolina.

March 15, 1675, granted patent 367 acres in Norfolk Co. (Patent Book 6, p 584). Western side of the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River in the County of Lower Norfolk for the transportation of 7 persons into the Collony.

Only one child is named in his grandfather, John Biggs, Sr's, will and that is John. It is possible that there were other children for on November 27, 1684 Matthew Caswell petitioned against John Crickman and Robert Burgess in behalf of the Orphans (plural) of Edward Hassell, decd for cutting timber on the orphan's land (Order Book, 1675-86). It is possible this child or children died before their grandfather wrote his will in 1694.

On May 21, 1679, Hannah Hassell petitioned the Lower Norfolk Co court for administration of the estate of Edward Hassell, Book 1675-1686 Court Orders, p 88.

Inventory of Edward's estate June 7, 1679, recorded August 15, 1679. Lower Norfolk Co, Book 1675-1686 Court Orders, p 90.
