Notes for William Anson Halbert

Tradition makes William Halbert eighth in descent from Pocahontas, and also related to the Randolphs of Virginia.

John Boddie's Historical Southern Families, Vol IX, p 191, gives WIlliam a middle name Anson

After marrying they moved to Roane County, VA and then to Pendleton District SC on the Saluda RIver not far from Calhoun SC

Source, History of Acker-Halbert Family, p 13: After the Revolution in 1786 moved to South Carolina and settled on the Saluda river. He was prosperous and left to his wife and each of his thirteen children two hundred acres of land and several negroes. He was a staunch Whig in the days of the Revolution. In South Carolina, he was a man of prominence in his community and served as justice of the peace for many years. He was about five feet and nine inches tall, of stout build and had red beard.

In November 1775 he enlisted in the Partisan Legion Cavalry for the war, as shown by manuscript certificate on file in the Virginia State Library and signed by Henry Lee, General. Another certificate, filed in the same library, dated February 23, 1784, signed by Peter Johnston, Lt. Lee's Legion, says: "I certify that William Halbert enlisted in the Partisan Legion for the war and was a citizen of Virginia at the time of his enlistment."

1786 moved his family to SC and settled on the Saluda River

History of Old Pendleton District, RW Simpson, Bradford Publishing (no date), p 12, "By the Act of 1789, Vol V, p 105, the new counties of Pendleton and Greenville were allowed representation in the legislature...at the same session commissioners were appointed to locate a court house for the County of Pendleton. The commissioners were...Wm. Halbert. ... On the 10th day of May, 1790, the first quarterly court was held in the new court house. Present: Magistrates ... and William Halbert."

In the name of God Amen. I William Halbert of Pendleton District being of perfect mind and memory thanks be to God Almighty calling to mind the mortality of my body knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament that is to say
First I recommend my Soul into the hands of almighty God that gave it my body I recommend unto the earth to burial in a descent manner of the discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same by the mighty power of God and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me with I demise and dispose of the same in the following manner
First my lawful debts to be paid I also lend unto my beloved wife Elizabeth Halbert two hundred acres of land including the plantation whereon I now live also all my household furniture with all my stock of old negros and other stock of all kinds during her natural life or widowhood provided she should marry then she to have one childs after all my children is loted of with what I allow them to have at their setting out or leaving me. My will and desire is that all my children at their coming of age or marrying shall have as follows
I do give my son Joel Halbert the land I bought from Ralph Owens and Elijah Owens that he has now in possession and two negroes (viz) Tol and Mo with other necessaries which he has in possession.
I do give my son John Halbert two negroes viz, Gean and Mills and other goods he now has in his possession
I do give my son Enos Halbert what lands he has in possession including the land I bought from Herny Burdine, one negro: viz. Rhoda with the other property he has in possession
I do give my son Arther's children, two hundred acres of land, the tract where on he died and fifty of a tract we call Hiroth to be divided between his children. Viz. Harry Halbert, John Halbert, Sinda, and Arther when they come of age.
I do give my son James Halbert two hundred acres of land joining that where Arther died and running cross all the tracts and with one young negro. Viz. Peter and at the other I give or put in his possession.
I do give my son William Halbert three hundred and 32 acres of land including the mill of Big Creek and a tract of ninety acres called Daterul one young negro horse bridle and saddle bed with stock of different kinds
To begin with I do give my son Joshua Halbert two hundred acres of land joining James cross all tracts and one young negro also the thirty acres and mill shoal on Saluda I purchased from William Acker and at his mother's death to have the plantation and tract she lives on with horse and saddle and bed and furniture and stock of different kinds.
I do give my daughter Martha Grisham two young negroes with what other property I gave her that she has in possession
I do give my daughter Susannah Acker two young negroes with what other property I gave in her possession.
I do give my daughter Frankah Garrison two young negroes with what other property I gave in her possession.
I do give my daughter Elizabeth Berry two young negroes with what other property I gave in her possession.
I do give my daughter Mary Halbert two young negroes horse saddle bed and furniture with stock of different kinds to house keep it with.
I do give my daughter Lucinda Halbert two young negroes horse saddle bed furniture and stock of different kinds…
I don't mean more but equal to what the rest of you had.
I do desire that my beloved wife Elizabeth Halbert shall enjoy all my personal estate only what my children takes as they come of age provided she does not destroy or diminish it during her natural life or widowhood after her death what is remaining of the estate to be divided amongst my children or their children to have share
I likewise constitute ordain and appoint Joel Halbert, John Halbert, Enos Halbert, and John Grisham executors to this my last will and testament. I do hereby disallow revoke and disannul all and every former testament wills legacies bequeaths and executors by me in anywise before named and bequeathed but rectify confirm this to be my last will and testament in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this thirtieth day of July in the year of our Lord Savior Jesus Christ on thousand eight hundred and six.
