From Ludington-Saltus Records, Collected by Ethel Saltus Ludington, Edited by Louis Effingham de Forest, 1925, p 151: supposed to have come to this country about 1640, settling in the part of Charlestown, Massachusetts, which later became the town of Malden. He was in Malden from 1640 to 1660, moving to New Haven, Connecticut, at the end of that period. He died in New Haven in 1661. The estate was probated on October 1, 1661, in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, and an inventory filed there on April 1, 1662. His estate was also probated at New Haven, an inventory dated March 3, 1662/3 appearing in the New Haven Colony Records. At the time the inventory was presented to the court at New Haven the record states that there was to be present at the next hearing "the widdow with him yt she was to marry." Then William died, he owned a house and land and also another piece of 100 acres. His real estate in New Haven was on the river that divides East Haven from Branford, where there were iron works established in 1655, with which he seems to have been connected. Depositions made by William in 1657 giving his age as fifty and his wife Ellen (also appears as Helen) in 1659 giving hers as forty, place the dates of their births.

From Genealogy of the Greenleaf Family, compiled by James Edward Greenleaf, Boston: Frank Wood, Printer, 1896, p 75: The deed of the farm of Enoch Greenleaf was recorded with Middlesex Deeds, Vol. VIII, p 2, states "in all that his house and lands lying and being in Malden, in the county of Middlesex, which was lately the house and land of William Luddington, containing by estimation 46 acres in uplands, swamps and meadow ground, together with the new house erected thereupon, with all the out-houses...."

From The History of Malden Massachusetts 1633-1785, by Deloraine Pendre Corey, Malden: Published by the Author, 1899, p 87: "In an entry relating to highways made in January, 1643/44, and hereafter given, the house of William Luddington is mentioned; and it is soon after again noted in a grant of upland made to Edward Mellowes. Luddington had bought the 5 acres lot which had been laid out to WIlliam Dade, and I am led to believe that here he built his house. If so, it was situated near the marshes of the South River and not far from Sweetser's Point, as it "butted" upon that river, and the highway to the Mystic was not far away."

Luddington, William, died at the Ironworks, 1662, and his widow married George Rose. He had William, Henry (died in 1676), Hannah, John, Thomas, a daughter
p 70 lists William's death, June 13, 1662, with this note "the first man of this name and family"
