He acquired under his father's will and by deed of gift a large tract of land in Gilbert's Manor, which he sold in 1739.

In 1739 Joseph moved to Bucks County, Pennsylvania at Buckingham in Plumstead Township where he resided for twelve years. The religious activities of this family are noted in a book, "Early Friends Families of Upper Bucks", located in the Alabama Archives.

On July 2, 1751, he requested a certificate to Fairfax Monthly Meeting of Friends for himself, his wife, and three youngest children, Benjamin, Rachel and Deborah, after which he moved his family to Virginia about 1753.

It is important to note that at this point (1750), his son Joseph has married Mary Shaw and moved with his father to Virginia.
