While residing in Virginia, Joseph's youngest son Benjamin died. From Benjamin's will recorded October 10, 1769 is read "It is further my will and desire that my father, Joseph Burson, is to be maintained with food and rainment fitting for a man of his age and circumstance, out of the whole estate excepting what has been bequeathed to my wife above."
