Otto and his four siblings were sent to America by their family. They came by ship from Bremmerhaven, Germany, stopped in several ports in Europe, then New York, finally disembarking in New Orleans on July 2, 1904. Otto came to California and began working at his trade , a butcher, in the Ventura County area. He used to slaughter cattle on the Moon ranch in Montalvo, where he meet Dot. He proposed to her, but they did not tell her parents for a while. They then married.
