Notes for Green English

When Monroe County, GA was young, Green English and his family settled on the High Falls Road. They arrived before the Indians surrendered their land to the white settlers. He lived peacefully among them while raising a family of 14 children. The Alabama Road ran near the English home which still stands today. Stage coaches passed several times during the day. Green, Mary and some of the children and many others are buried in the old English Family Cemetery is near the church and family house.

History of Lamar County, Augusta Lambdin, Editor, The Barnesville News-Gazette, 1932:
p 59 "It was originally an Indian trail, but in the early 1820's it was changed to a stage road and some 18 or 20, perhaps as many as 25 stages were used on it at all times. The Alabama Road entered Monroe County (now Lamar) from the northeast. The first stage stand was at Unionville. From that point the road passed the homes of William Darden, Green English, Daniel Goddard, and Hiram Bloodworth, than a stage stand kept by JW Settles."
p 210 "High Shoals Primitive Baptist Church was organized December 15, 1837, at the house of E. Phillips by a small group of men and women who had withdrawn from Rocky Creek Church. The list of charter members includes: Kinchen Morgan (Mary Polly Morgan English's brother), Green English, Sarah Morgan (possibly Kinchen's wife), Telitha Phillips (John Jefferson English's wife's mother), and Mary English (Green's wife). It was not until 1840 that the congregation had a permanent home. The church was build on land near the Alabama Road deeded by Green English. The building committee is instructed in the minutes to build 'the meeting-house 30' wide, 50' long and 10' high.
The minutes of October 1861, record that G. English was appointed "to set apart by partition a portion of the church for the use of the colored people".
p 211 Green English was the clerk of High Shoals Church from 1838-1849
