"Died of diphtheria at age 3 or 4. At the time her father was in the Confederate Army, somewhere in Virginia, and hearing of little Mary's illness and that she was not expected to live, got a furlough to go home. Transportation was poor in those days and it took him quite a long time to get home. I've heard him tell of praying so earnestly that little Mary could at least be spared until he got home and saw her. She was - but died a short time after he arrived."
