Notes for Mary Acker

From Noble Acker, p 251: James and Mary had only one child. When he was about 2 years old, they departed South Carolina and settled in Smith County, Tennessee near Carthage. They traveled by horseback along the French Broad River northward, then westward via Knoxville and over the Cumberland Mountains to Kingston near the Caney Forks, a branch of the Cumberland River, east of Nashville, and on the Carthage, Tenn. The family revisited South Carolina in 1812, just prior to the War of 1812. After returning to Tenn., James enlisted in Andrews Jackson's Army to subdue the Creek Indians in the Mississippi Territory, which is today eastern Alabama. James served with Jackson's Army through the Battle of Horseshoe Bend on the Coosa Tallapoosa River where the Creek force of about 1,000 were killed. Afterwards, he joined his family in Tenn. In 1819 the family moved to Jonesboro (Jones Valley), Jefferson Co., Alabama where James died soon afterwards. Their son, Bayles Earl, was raised to manhood by his mother afterwards supporting her until her death in 1852.
It is apparent the route taken by the Grace family was the same route taken by Joseph Acker and Nancy (Acker) McDavid. The three families were in Alabama about the same time prior to 1819 when Alabama because a state.
