"18 months after her husband drowned, Guntersville native Dorothy Drake Turner died Wednesday, Spt. 17, 2008, in Crystal Springs, Miss., after years of lung trouble. She was 75.
Her husband Haskell Turner jumped in the river on March 31, 2007 after a little girl got into the water and couldn't get out. He managed to get her out but lost his own life.
Mrs. Turner was born in Guntersville to Ruby and James Thompson Drake. Her father died when she was 3. Her mother later married Grady Gilbreath and served for years as the librarian of the Guntersville Library.
Mrs. Turner graduated from Marshall County High School in 1950. She was attending Judson College at Marion when she met her husband, who was attending Marion Institute. They married a year later and moved to Mississippi, where both attended the University of Mississippi.
She worked for years for Frymaster, a manufacturer of large cookware in Shreveport, Louisiana. After retiring there, she and her husband moved to Crystal Springs, living on a tree farm that also served as a hunting camp.
She was a member of the Gatesville Baptist Church at Crystal Springs. Working for the church was her prime interest outside of her family.
She is survived by 2 daughters, Kathy Phelps of Baton Rouge and Ann Dahl of Bergen, Norway, 2 sons, Ross Turner of Jackson and Grady Turner of Crystal Springs; 4 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jeannene Patterson of Trussville, Alabama.
Her funeral was Friday at Springer Funeral Home in Crystal Springs, with burial in the church cemetery.
