Source: "Our Ancestors" by JA Brickhouse: Owned what was known as the Lake Phelps farm. He was very wealthy, having over 100 slaves and owning several ships which plied between the Albemarle Sound and the cities of Norfolk, Baltimore and New York.
James Anderson died in the city of New York from drinking too much ice water while he was very warm. His eldest daughter, Regina, was only six years of age. Dishonest lawyers and agents of his line of sailing vessels swindled his wife and the children out of the most of their property.

William Clough & Nancy Brickhouse were neighbors with James Anderson and Rachel Johnson at Lake Phelps in Washington/Tyrrell County, NC near Creswell.

Fed only by rainfall, Lake Phelps (16,600 acres) has an average depth of 4.5 feet and a beautiful, clear appearance - quite a contrast to many other lakes in this region. Its origin is still a matter of speculation. Lake Phelps is now part of Pettigrew State Park.
