This letter was written to Lois' sister, Alma Cate, Rt 3, Box 24, Anniston, Alabama about three weeks after Lois' death. In January 2005 it was in the possession of Lynn Livesey, Alma's granddaughter. Apparently Alma was keeping BH's children Otis would have been 17, Clarence 12, Ruby 7 and James 5. So Alma probably was keeping at least Clarence, Ruby and James. By 1917 Alma would have had two children Nellie and William Dalton of her own.
Mrs. Lesley was keeping the baby Margaret in Birmingham. Lynn Livesey remembers that her grandmother Alma wanted to keep the baby for her own. This clarifies the reference in the letter where BH says he has to study on whether or not she can keep the baby.

Dear Almer & Sweet Babies,

I will try tonight to ans your kind letter that I received yesterday. Was truly glad to hear from you all and to no that the children was well and doing well. I study about you all day and night when you all and every body else is a sleep. I am laying on my lonely bed study about you all. Almer, I never will forget you as you have been so good and kind to me and the

dear children. I tell you the truth, I think as much of you as I do the only sis I have. This is saying a lot about another mans wife, but I don't think OC will get mad at me as I think he is a real nice man and good to you. I wrote Addie and Allie both a long letter the other day and tried to explain dear Lois sickness and death the best I could, but I was so torn up

and bothered I don't know where the dear girls could read it or not. Well, Almer, we done about got straightened up at last and I went to work yesterday. Brought the baby home last night as Mrs. Lisley was right puney and didn't feel like tending to her and Mrs. Juell was afraid to keep her up in her room so I went and got her. She don't seem to be very well satisfied here yet and she goes a little cold and is cutting four more teeth, has two more just about through, so that makes her a little fretful and they have sorter spoilt her handling her so much. But I guess that she soon will get over that. Well, Almer, I will tell you what Sis and me have decided and if it will suit you and you can do it and it is

Page 4
This for you to come down Sunday and bring the children and Sis wants you to stay as much as 3 or 4 days if not longer to help her fix up the children close as my cousin can't sew any as she never learned how and has her thumb off on her right hand so that makes it hard on her trying to sew. Now, Almer, in regards to you having the baby. I can't say just yet. I know she will be in good hands with you but it will be too hard on you to wait on her and your own child to and all the rest that you have to wait on. But I will study it over by the time you come that is if you can and OC is willing for you to come. You come Sunday and I will meet you at the train and help you off with all the little ones and if you can't come write me so I can get it by Saturday and if you can't come I will come up there Sunday as I am getting real anxious to see the babies. Now, Almer, I haven't got that check yet so I will have to ask you to pay your fare down here and I will give it to you as soon as you get here. As it will be here before then. Well, Almer, I don't know where you can read this or not as I can't hardly see to write as there is something the matter with one of my eyes. It hurts me so I can't hardly see at all. So kiss the children for me and tell OC to kiss you for me. So write soon to your lonely and heart broken brother,
