Washington was the Chief Deputy for the Boaz Police Department and was killed along with two other officers in an ambush slaying. when he was about 35. He died of wounds in the throat and head after being driven back to Boaz, three miles from the scene of the shooting. Deputy Bennett collapsed in the street after arrival in Boaz and although rushed to Holy Name of Jesus Hospital in Gadsden, died several hours later.
