Notes for Benjamin Passley Johnson, Jr

From Icle Smith's records: Married January 9, 1875. Benjamin P and Nancy both born and reared in Brown's Valley, Marshall County, Alabama on adjoining farms. Bought the Nabors farm and they are both now in the Johnson possession.

p. 196, December 24, 1948, "The late B.V. Alexander gave this information to me: B.P. Johnson married Miss Nannie Nabors and she is dead. He lives with his son J.W. Johnson at Guntersville.'"

p. 120, "In the 1890's J W Sinquefield and family moved to Brown's Valley at Diamond and ran a store at the old gin stand where W J Copeland and J E Linn operated a saw mill, grist mill and gin. BP Johnson operated the machinery last. The building and contents were destroyed by fire."

Those that operated gins and grist mills have been WJ Copeland and JE Linn, BP Johnson, JN Riggins, GB Johnson and Carless Berry. The gin house was destroyed by fire. The first water power grist mill was operated on the branch near TB Boyles' place by Barney Boyles Sr. The Johnson and Alexander families were from North Carolina, the Boyles and Allen families from Tennessee, the Nabors and Noble families from South Carolina.

p. 76 B P Johnson was a postmaster at Diamond.

p. 59, What gave rise to Diamond's name, there were diamond pebbles at an oil well drilled on the Washington W Griffen place.

Source Church Register of Centerpoint (currently Diamond Methodist), Warrenton Circuit, North Alabama Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South: Register of Members 1884 lists Benjamin P Johnson received September 17, 1884 by profession. Lists him as being buried in the Diamond Cemetery, April 27, 1945

1909 Map of Marshall County shows "Johnson Store" and lists BP and JW as landowners in Beat 14, Warrenton

1910 Census, Warrenton, Marshall County, AL, p 176, sister Rebecca, 62, and Sarah Williams, 65, living with him, living next door to his son James W.,

1920 Census lists Benjamin P as a dry good store salesman and living next door to son James W.

OBITUARY: "Uncle Ben Johnson Dies at Age of 88"
Survived by 78 descendants, Ben P Johnson, former postmaster, merchant, farmer, ginner and sawmill operator at Diamond, was buried Monday at the Anderson cemetery near there. ....Mr. Johnson Died Sunday at the age of 88 after a few days' illness. He had been in failing health for some years. Since the death of his wife several years ago he had made his home with his children at Guntersville and Diamond..... Uncle Ben spent most of his life at Diamond, where he ran a store many years. He had the Diamond post office in his store a long time ago, and also operated a gin, sawmill and planer. He was a member of the Diamond Methodist church 70 years.

Death certificate lists cause of death as acute Chloleslystitis due to gall stones, a chlolecystotomy operation was performed on April 21, 1945. He died the next day at 3pm in the afternoon
