Notes for Benjamin Johnson

1900 census his son Ben P said he was born in North Carolina

His tombstone at Griffin Cemetery aka Diamond Cemetery states "Benjamin Johnson 1811-1862 Born in Virginia settled here in 1832". Census records and his father's death date indicate he was born in 1805.

Came from Southampton County, Virginia via Northampton County, North Carolina who settled in Jackson County, Alabama. Soon after he married Celia Ann Sublett this couple then settled in Brown's Valley (which was then in Blount County, but later became a part of Marshall County, Alabama upon the establishing of this county in 1834) among the Cherokee Indians, also among the Creek who had refused to move to Oklahoma. While the Indians were still in possession of the valley, Mr. Johnson bought part of his farm from the Indians and homesteaded the rest of the farm. The Johnson family maintained possession and still maintains possession of part of the family lands after more than 160 years.

1836 Fry's Company of Alabama Mounted Volunteers in the Creek Indian War, company signed up one source said August 17, 1836 and another said September 5, 1836 at Baxter's Store, Claysville, Marshall County, Alabama, made up of men from Jackson and Marshall Counties. Mustering Officer: Andrew Moore. This company lists a Benjamin Johnson and a James Johnson could James be related to Ben?

p. 196, December 24, 1948, "The late B.V. Alexander gave this information to me: 'My mother was Mary Johnson, a daughter of the late Benjamin Johnson Sr. and Sallie Sublett. They came from North Carolina to Alabama before the Civil War. They settled in Brown's Valley on the place now owned by J. W. Johnson, a grandson of B. P. Johnson. It is called Diamond now. Grandfather Johnson was a money lender before the Civil War and lost it all.'"
