After her parents death she was placed at a ranch in the Hanford area with the prominant McQuiddy family as a bond servant. Her chores included care for the famliy children, and housework. It was here that she met Alphonso, who had also gotten a job at the ranch. It is unknown how she got released from being a bond servant, as the term was seven years. However, there is no record of a formal Bond in the Tulare County records. She married Alponso when she was 17, and the McQuiddy's and Biddles were her witnesses. Catherine and Dorothy said that she rarely spoke about her family, and Catherine said she often seemed sad when the topic came up.
